Youth Supervision at a Glance

  • All climbers under 14 must be actively supervised
  • Supervisors are expected to maintain line-of-sight and stay within 25 feet of the youth climber(s) at all times
  • Supervisors must be 18 or older
  • Supervisors and climbers must have a completed waiver before climbing
  • Anyone under 18 must have a waiver completed by a parent or legal guardian
  • There is no charge for someone to supervise if they are not climbing.
  • Children 5 and under may find climbing extra challenging, since they are usually still developing the necessary motor skills for an enjoyable experience

Youth Supervision Ratios

To mitigate risk of injury for all participants, we strongly recommend the following adult-to-child supervision ratios for parents and guardians supervising children outside of a structured program setting:

  • Preschoolers (Ages 3-5): 1 adult per 2 children
  • Elementary Kids (Ages 6-11): 1 adult per 3 children
  • Middle Schoolers (Ages 11-13): 1 adult per 4 youth climbers

Youth Climbers Cannot be Monitored if Their Supervisor:

  • Cannot see what they are doing
  • Is too far away to intervene
  • Is distracted
  • Is also climbing
  • Is belaying a partner
  • Is supervising too many kids at once
